10:30 PM I put baby puppies to bed and crawl in mine. It was a long day that started for me at 5:30 AM. I was up at the crack of moon to get ready to drive down south to the breeder to pick up a precious, unseen, baby Pomeranian. I was supposed to pick up one puppy, but came home with two. Salespeople love to buy, don't they?
If you've ever had a Pom, you know what a delight they are. Cute balls of inquisitive fur who are highly intelilgent, cocky, and really know how to work a crowd. I had a Pom about four years ago. He was eighteen years old when we had to put him down. Even our vet cried. It has taken us this long to be able to bring another one home because the first, Bradley McLeod, was so amazing.
10:50 PM I awaken to sharp puppy squeaks and run to check on them. Angus McLeod needs a potty break. Trained already at eight weeks, I scoop both he and his sister, Hailey Devyn up and deposit them on the puppy pad so that they can take care of business. I live on a lake and nature preserve, and at 1 pound 2 ounces and 1 pound 4 ounces, there is no way I am taking them outside late at night with the amount of wildlife I have around my home.
10:52 PM they need to chow down (again) and they want to play. Great. I want to sleep. I lay on the floor in the family room and watch with one eye as they cavort around with each other. Hailey is the oldest and at one pound four ounces she outweighs baby brother Angus by two ounces. He is half her size, and may even be smaller than a gerbil. He's expected to be all of three pounds at full growth. She may reach four to five pounds. Judging by the way she eats it will be closer to the five. He is carrying a petite Nylar brand bone around in his mouth that is almost bigger than he is. She drops
hers and takes the other end of his. They chew contentedly, each working on an end. Finally get them back into their bed at 11:15 PM and I fall into mine.
1:11 AM I hear the now familiar squeek. I peer into the porta-play pen we purchased especially for them. They are so small that they have to be corraled lest someone inadvertently step on them, and I don't want them to find mischief for themsleves, i.e., going behind the refrigerator, under the sofas, on my orientals. He realizes he has me trained to respond when he squeaks and jumps on sleeping Hailey to show her what he can do. I think that my responding like this every time he decides he wants human interaction may not be smart, but they are already in the potty training mode so I do what needs to be done: get up and get them on the potty pad to reinforce the plan. For good measure he leaps on Hailey's back again to make sure she is awake and knows that they are about to be set free again.
1:27 AM they are finally resting after chowing down, again, and racing around the family room. They want to be cuddled and I oblige. (I drowsily wish I had planned to take the day off.)
2:44 AM I hear what I now recognize is his sharp squeak. Back out to the family room, I wondered where all of the help was that I was promised earlier. Now when I put them on the pad it is automatic. They are crunching on their puppy chow, Angus has his front paws in the bowl, and Hailey keeps taking the pebbles out of the bowl and putting them on the floor before selecting just the right one to munch on. Diet conscious already, she's all girl.
2:58 AM Angus discovers his love for diamond earrings and keeps going for the studs in my ears. Suddenly I am irresistible and they want nothing less than to shower me with puppy kisses. They start to wrestle and sound like little gremlins. I am going to bed and so are they.
5:30 AM Sharp angry squeaks. I am up for the day. Oh, goody. I can catch the sunrise for the second day in a row. I wonder if they sell doggie diapers. Is Starbucks open at this hour? They are both awake in their porta-cot and are glad to see me, greeting me with wagging tails and tiny little Pom bounces. They have not cried for their mother since we picked them up and don't seem to care that they have been separated from the rest of the pack. They are in their new pack, and at the moment, this is all they care about. They are fed, fat and happy.
Ah, puppy love. Is there anything more wonderful than a new puppy?

sweet puppies! they are so cute, good luck with the training
Awww, They are soooo cute. My brother had a pom, he was also part mine. (by default)(good arrangment, I didn't have to pay any of his expenses) :) I used to dogsit and he just thought my house was his. He was the sweetest little dog in the world. Too bad he couldn't live forever. :(
Absolutely precious... Definitely stole my heart! But I was warned! I hope you'll post more pictures as they get older!
Congrats on the new puppies and sorry for your loss. They are so adorable. I have a friend that has a Pom-her name is Riley. She is adorable and fat. When I pick her up she feels like a brick. And when she eats she snorts like a pig. She is black with white socks.
I am in the market for a baby English Bulldog. For some reason I love those ugly things!
Thanks, Crystal. I know that you are a horse lover and usually horse lovers have a "whole passal" (which is something I learned here in the American south that seems to mean a great many) of cats, dogs, and other assorted pets and "critters". I don't think that you can be an animal lover and only have one variety.
I enjoy your posts and look forward to reading more.
You're a good auntie to baby sit something that has four legs and a tail! It's tough when you get a pet because you know that it's likely you'll outlive them, but they bring so much joy into our lives, and they love so unconditionally. It's hard not to love them and have our hearts broken when they leave us. When they are all new and honey-breathed we take for granted each day we have with them.
We take ours everywhere, and have found that SHERATON HOTELS are very receptive to having pets as guests. Our experience has been that the pets are brought up luxurious beds of their own, special bowls and a place mat, and a goodie bag. The concierge always has the name of a professional baby sitting service that is usually glad to accomodate pet sitting so that you can go off without the pets and not worry about them being a disturbance to other guests. I have found that the staff in the hotel always makes a point of wishing the doggies good morning when they come down or asking them how their walk was or if they enjoyed their day out. Good customer relations builders, aren't they?
Toni, you know we gals like to do photos! I may have to build a web site or create a blog just for the poms! I see people with mini digital picture viewers on their keychains and I know a lot of people use their camera phones as portable photo albulms. Whoever came up with those ideas knew what they were doing. Women love to talk about their kids, whether they are two legged or four!
Angelia, have read some of your posts and love the way that they are short and informative.
I bet your friend's pom snorting is a hoot. Sounds like Miss Congeniality!
Deborah...
HAHA these pics are PRICELESS! Thanks for sharing, I'm still smiling!
Deborah,
They are precious and very lucky to have you! Thanks for sharing. I have a german shepherd...not so cute anymore, but so loving and faithful. I lost a dog last october. He was 13 years old and my very best friend. Thanks, again.
Deborah, they are sooooo adorable and cuddly and perfect. It'll be like taking care of babies! All I can say is AAAAAWWWWWWWWWWWW. Keep the photos going so we can watch them grow.
Later in the rain~Deb
Deborah, These beautiful pups now have a wonderful home with you. Hope they bring you many years of pleasure. Thank your for sharing.
Billie, my nephew in England has an English bulldog. They are most unusual looking but they definitely have tremendous personalities and are very devoted companions. Hope you find a good breeder who has socialized the pups so that he/she will make a great companion. I'm sure you won't be disappointed with a bulldog. Be sure to post pics when you finally get one!
Richard, you're great at marketing - - - don't you think that PetSmart should do puppy shower registrations like Babies R Us? The price of the pup is nothing compared to the cost of the puppy gear.
Thanks, Laura. Sorry you lost your pal. It is very painful to lose one and when you have to be involved in the decision it is even more heartbreaking. Laura, you need to go and get another buddy. You have the shepard and animals do better in pairs. If you need more help justifying getting another, let me know. I can justify anything! ;-)
Deb, it IS like taking care of babies. We can't take our eyes of them!! They are into everything!! I have had to puppy proof my family room because they are facinated by everything but their toys and nylar bones.
When will they sleep through the night??????? I need rest!!
Thank you, Margaret. They do have a good home and I am happy that the breeder felt that she could trust us with these two tiny balls of fur. They have absolutely turned our household and lives upside down. I can't believe we are going through this all over again!
Deborah, Pretty smart breeder to pick you. Keep us posted as they grow.
Well, we also have a blue front amazon parrot. But she's so mean no one can be around her, with the exception of my husband. My shephard was in and out of the shelters until we got him and doesn't do well with other dogs (or people for that matter.) He's been wonderful for my husband and myself and does better with strangers (depending on the patience of the stranger). I think we'll pass on the 2nd dog for now, but you enjoy your babies!!!!
Who could resist those faces?
Simply fabulous babies you have! I lost my dear baby 2 years ago and haven't the heart to get another one yet. But when I do, a pom she will be! Thanks for sharing.
Connie, so glad you liked them. Sorry you lost your baby. It is a very hard thing to get over. When you decide to bring another one home, be sure to send pics. Anyone who has ever had a Pom knows how irresistible they are and I am certain that there are many of throughout AR that would like a chance to ooh and ahh your new baby.
They are so adorable! My sisters just bred their minature dogs-sorry the breed escapes my mind-but they don't grow over about 12lbs-and Jazz just had 2 puppies-they are going to be hard to sell, the kids have fallen in love with them-they look like little tiny hampsters!
What great pics. Cute puppies and good luck with them. I have a English bulldog Bruno take a look at him on my post. He is a my best bud!! A face only a mother could love!!
Tinker
Thanks, Tinker. They are sooooooo sweet. Hailey has something going on with her and had to make an emergency run to the vet last night. The poor vet was with her until midnight and we took her home and dropped her back off at 9AM this morning. Stopped by and saw her after I closed the officed tonight at 5PM, and am waiting to go and get her later tonight when our vet decides to call it a night. Hate to see these little tiny babies sick. Her brother, Angus, has cried his eyes out for her and he is now fast asleep on my lap.
Billie Chubb of Chibb Realty Group (Here in the Rain) also has a thing for English Bulldogs and may be in the market for one. You might want to make contact,, swap stories, tell tales, etc. Those English Bull dogs have a loyal fan club and I'll bet that she would be interested in finding out more about them.
Send pics. Always want to see the mug of an English!
Oh my gosh, they are adorable! My mom has a Pom. He is about 9 years old and has been a great little dog!!
They do make wonderful little ankle biters! Thanks, Cheryl.
You are lucky that you made it out with only 2 dollies.
Kathleen, you gave me my first laugh of the day. Pithy and witty. Love it!
My oh my! Qhat cute Poms! My grandsons girlfriend has one who is just precious! She weighs in at 4 pounds (finally) and it so darn cute and spoiled its rediculous! You just want to steal her away! Her name is Isabella and she is two years old! I will have to get you a picture of her to check out!
